Patrick Watson kondigt vol trots ‘Better in the Shade’ aan; zijn zevende full-length studio album, klaar voor digitale release op 22 april via Secret City Records/V2. Dit nieuwe album verschijnt na een paar productieve laatste jaren -ondanks de wereldwijde pandemie- waarin Patrick meerdere nummers uitbracht (‘A Mermaid in Lisbon’, ‘Que reste-t’il de nos amours?’, ‘Lost With You’) als vervolg op zijn bekroonde laatste album ‘Wave’ (2019). De fysieke release van ‘Better in the Shade’ verschijnt later dit jaar.
Patrick Watson over het nieuwe album: “It is about negotiating a world where you don’t know what’s real anymore. I really spent a lot of time reading to improve my lyrics for this record. I was very inspired by ‘Jesus’ Son’ by Denis Johnson, ‘The Waves’ by Virginia Woolf and ‘Fever Dream’ by Samanta Schweblin. The lyrics are a collection of little thoughts that were pacing in my head. We worked hard on rebuilding the tones of our arrangements and we brought a bigger electronic component to the music. With the addition of modular synths, we were able to find a warmer and more touching approach to the electronics, that feel as acoustic as the rest of the instruments and move like liquid. Basically, I went back to school for the last two years to be able to bring something new ha-ha. Andrew Barr from the Barr Brothers joined us on drums for this record, it’s a pleasure to play music with such a great musician”.
Samen met de albumaankondiging verschijnt ook meteen de eerste single ‘Height of the Feeling’, waar Patrick het volgende over vertelt: “It’s about using intimacy as a compass when you feel out of your skin”. Zoals hij beschrijft: “I sometimes just have trouble without affection to ground me. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, it just is. I was lucky to be able to co-write this with Ariel Engle from La Force. She’s so much fun to work with. We just did loads of improv takes on one mic and giggled together the whole time”.
Patrick Watson componeert, treedt op en neemt zijn albums op met zijn jarenlange bandgenoot en samenwerker Mishka Stein. Watson en zijn band, die in Canada de Polaris Music Prize wonnen en meerdere JUNO- en Polaris-nominaties kregen, hebben getoerd op alle continenten, soms met volledige orkesten om hun rijke muziek tot leven te brengen. Tijdens hun meest recente tournee speelde de band in enkele van hun grootste zalen tot nu toe, waaronder het Barbican (Londen), L’Olympia (Parijs), Coliseu (Lissabon), El Plaza Condesa (Mexico City), en nog veel meer. Watson is opgegroeid (en woont nog steeds) in Montreal. Hij componeerde verschillende muziekstukken voor zowel film als televisie, waaronder een trailer voor The Walking Dead en Wim Wenders’ 3D-film Everything Will Be Fine.
