De Duitse producer en componist Nils Frahm brengt op 23 september zijn nieuwe, ruim drie uur durende, studioalbum Music For Animals uit op zijn eigen label LEITER. Music For Animals werd tussen 2020 en 2022 in de studio van Nils Frahm in Berlijn’s Funkhaus complex opgenomen. De eerste single Right Right Right is nu uit.
Met tien tracks die samen ruim drie uur duren is het een ambitieuze en meeslepende set die verschilt van alles wat Nils Frahm tot nu toe heeft uitgebracht – de oprichter van Piano Day weigert zelfs een piano te gebruiken – maar tegelijkertijd behoudt het veel van de kwaliteiten die het werk van de invloedrijke muzikant in de afgelopen twee decennia hebben weten te onderscheiden.
Music For Animals ontvouwt zich in een ongehaast, meditatief tempo in een viering van toon, timbre en textuur – en dus van geluid zelf – en biedt een ongewoon meeslepende ervaring. Toch fungeert het ook als wat Erik Satie ooit ‘Meubelmuziek’ noemde, en nodigt het de luisteraar uit om op zijn gemak in en uit te dwalen. “My constant inspiration”, legt Frahm uit, “was something as mesmerizing as watching a great waterfall or the leaves on a tree in a storm. It’s good we have symphonies and music where there’s a development, but a waterfall doesn’t need an Act 1, 2, 3, then an outcome, and nor do the leaves on a tree in a storm. Some people like watching the leaves rustle and the branches move. This record is for them.”
Als titel is Music For Animals een ironische knipoog naar conceptuele albums uit de jaren vijftig – zoals Raymond Scott’s Music For Babies – maar ook naar hedendaagse gewoonten op het gebied van afspeellijsten. “I feel a certain frustration with the functional use of music these days, all these playlists with names like Music for Sleeping, Music for Focus, Music for Masturbation”, lacht Frahm. “Music always seems to need to do something useful. That’s a very client-driven logic: the client needs something, the music should deliver that, otherwise ‘You’re Fired!’ With this album, there was no specific audience in mind, and nor was it adapted to any particular purpose. But in fact, it seemed to please the animals I’ve spent a lot of time with these last months, so, you know: if you can’t beat them, join them…!”
Music For Animals lijkt in eerste instantie misschien intimiderend, maar de waarheid is dat deze substantiële collectie luisteraars aanmoedigt om slechts zoveel aandacht op te eisen als ze willen bijdragen. Het komt allemaal terug op die waterval. Als je ernaar wilt kijken, kijk er dan naar. Als je dat niet wilt, dan hoeft dat ook niet. Het zal altijd hetzelfde zijn, maar ook nooit helemaal. Dat is de grootste kracht van Music For Animals. Direct herkenbaar, maar toch als geen ander.
