The Line Is A Curve is het nieuwe album van Kae Tempest, dat op 8 april 2022 zal verschijnen. Het is het vierde studioalbum van de artiest uit het Zuid-Londense Lewisham, die tijdens de aankomende tour ook Down The Rabbit Hole zal aandoen. Het album komt in navolging van het veelgeprezen toneelstuk Paradise, dat vorige zomer in première ging in het National Theatre. De aankondiging gaat gepaard met de release van de eerste single More Pressure feat. Kevin Abstract. Het was niemand minder dan Rick Rubin die Kae Tempest en Kevin Abstract (BROCKHAMPTON) bij elkaar bracht, nadat de hiphopartiest begeesterd raakte van het werk van Kae.
Na het uitbrengen van het vorige studioalbum, The Book of Traps and Lessons, realiseerde Kae Tempest zich dat het nieuwe album een communicatieve plaat moest worden. Het concept manifesteerde zich onder andere in de gastbijdragen die op het album te vinden zijn (onder meer Grian Chatten van Fontaines DC, Lianne La Hava en Confucius MC). Ook voerde Kae Tempest deze visie door tijdens het opnameproces, toen werd besloten om drie vocale takes op één dag te doen voor drie verschillende generaties mensen: een onbekende man van 78, de 29-jarige dichter Bridget Minamore en drie jonge tienerfans die hadden gereageerd op een social media post.
Naast begeleidend artwork van de welbekende fotograaf Wolfgang Tillmans, wordt het album door Kae Tempest als volgt beschreven: “The Line Is A Curve is about letting go. Of shame, anxiety, isolation and falling instead into surrender. Embracing the cyclical nature of time, growth, love. This letting go can hopefully be felt across the record. In the musicality, the instrumentation, the lyricism, the delivery, the cover art. In the way it ends where it begins and begins where it ends.I knew I wanted my face on the sleeve. Throughout the duration of my creative life, I have been hungry for the spotlight and desperately uncomfortable in it. For the last couple of records I wanted to disappear completely from the album covers, the videos, the front-facing aspects of this industry. A lot of that was about my shame but I masked it behind a genuine desire for my work to speak for itself, without me up front, commodifying what felt so rare to me and sacred. I was, at times, annoyed that in order to put the work out, I had to put myself out. But this time around, I understand it differently. I want people to feel welcomed into this record, by me, the person who made it, and I have let go of some of my airier concerns. I feel more grounded in what I’m trying to do, who I am as an artist and as a person and what I have to offer. I feel less shame in my body because I am not hiding from the world anymore. I wanted to show my face and I dreamed of it being Wolfgang Tillmans who took the portrait.”
Kae Tempest is een bestseller auteur, dichter en muzikant. In 2013 won Kae Tempest de Ted Hughes Award, werd hen genomineerd voor een Costa Book Award en een BRIT Award, stond hen twee keer op de shortlist voor de Mercury Prize en hen werd genomineerd voor twee Ivor Novello Awards. Ook werd Kae Tempest benoemd tot een Next Generation Poet door de Poetry Book Society, een tienjaarlijkse onderscheiding. In 2019 bracht Kae Tempest het studioalbum The Book of Traps and Lessons uit, dat werd geproduceerd door Rick Rubin.
