Hamish had the following to say about the latest song to land from “A Firmer Hand”:
“In “Bakerloo, Unbecoming”, I wrote “essentially it comes down [again] to the limitless mysteries of other men”. “Men Like Wire” is a deeper excavation of that idea. In short, it’s about men. Men I have and haven’t known, men I’ve seen, heard, loved and lost. Men I’ve been seated next to at weddings, bus stops and dinner parties, on trains, beds and park benches. They’re all in there, for better, for worse.”
HAMISH HAWK KONDIGT NIEUW ALBUM “A FIRMER HAND” AAN VOOR RELEASE OP 16 AUGUSTUS OP SO RECORDINGS
Hamish Hawk uit Edinburgh laat weten dat hij bij So Recordings heeft getekend en dat zijn nieuwe album “A Firmer Hand” op 16 augustus uitkomt.
Hamish deelt hierbij ook de eerste songs van zijn nieuwe plaat, waaronder
het speelse en bloedeerlijke ‘Big Cat Tattoos’.
Hamish zegt het volgende er over:
“Big Cat Tattoos is just one of the great unsaids that make up the new record, and it’s the birthplace of the album’s title: A Firmer Hand.
Unknowingly I’d been building up an ugly arsenal of great unsaids over the past few years, and the album became a place I could offload them, and with any luck put them to rest.
I tried to avoid cleaning things up at the time of
writing, I cornered myself into a warts-and-all approach. But don’t be fooled, Big Cat Tattoos is all talk. Our hero gets a few barbs in nice and early, and lands a couple of clumsy jabs, but in the end we’re witness to nothing more than a petty diatribe. It’s embittered, unbecoming and wholly embarrassing. It does have a certain get-up-and- go, though.”

Het nieuwe album van Hawk volgt op het doorbraak-album ‘Heavy Elevator’ uit 2021 en het veelgeprezen ‘Angel Numbers’ uit 2023, beide sublieme platen die zowel bij de pers als op de radio veel lof oogstten, waaronder – en dat is zeer bijzonder voor een artiest die eerder alles in eigen beheer uitbracht –zes singles op de play-list van BBC 6 Music.
Over zijn nieuwe album zegt Hamish het volgende:
“Writing this album, I opened up my closet, and a skeleton came out. The thing that links all of the songs is a sense of the unsaid, whether out of guilt, shame, repression, embarrassment, coyness, whatever it might have been. I realised: I am going to say these things, and not all of them are going to make me look good. The album made so many demands, and I just gave myself over to it.”
“Once I’d given myself over to the idea, I thought, I have to stick to this. I can’t hide anything from it. I can’t clean it all up for consumption. It felt uncomfortable for me – and that’s exactly how it should feel. That’s a really strong position.”
Door het schrijven van “Machiavelli’s Room”, gevolgd door nummers als “Milk an Ending” en “Juliet as Epithet”, begon “A Firmer Hand” sterk te lijken op een album gericht op Hawks relaties met mannen:
vrienden, geliefden, familie en collega’s.
“I thought, this is the body of the record. The fact that it makes me nervous tells me it was
the right thing to do.”
Er zijn maar een paar luisterbeurten nodig om er zeker van te zijn dat het risico het nemen waard was. En nog een paar om vast te stellen dat “A Firmer Hand” de beste en brutaalste plaat is die HamishHawk
tot nu toe heeft afgeleverd. “It’s a bit of a coming of age record,” zegt hij.
En tevens een ‘record’ van alle leeftijden.
Met zijn rijke stem en nog rijkere verbeeldingskracht creëert Hawk muzikale portretten en kamerpopliedjes die zowel een woordenboek als een compendium van moderne stads- (en eiland-)sprookjes hebben opgeslokt. En Hawk doet dit allemaal met veel humor, geïnspireerd door artiesten als Leonard Cohen, Jarvis Cocker,
Randy Newman en Stephin Merritt van Magnetic Fields.
Hamish Hawk zal het hele jaar door shows spelen ter ondersteuning van de nieuwe plaat, solo en met zijn band. Hij speelde inmiddels al een hele rij concerten, waaronder een reeks shows met Villagers. En onlangs kondigde hij een tour aan als support van Elbow in de zomer.
